BarAmigo’s two pesos – Dead as a dodo on Saturday night

Time visited – Sat 12 Mar 2011 9pm to 10.15pm

We should have left when we arrived. Our two sentence conversation with the bouncer whilst getting ID’s checked and scanned revealed that the Hawthorn had been pretty quiet for the past couple of months on Saturday nights. We really should have left when we arrived.

Saturday night is almost as empty as this photo. Photo from thehawthorn.com

Anyway, we did the right thing and stuck by our friends who had organised a large group to head over. At least there would be no problems in everyone getting in a getting a seat. The large outdoor area means there’s plenty of seats available for us.

But there was another bonus… no line at the bar! Pints of Boags draft at $8 each. Not too bad compared to city prices.

The people that are around are teens and early 20s. No need to dress to impress by any means. Its making me feel old. Anyway, its good to be outside having a drink on this balmy evening.

Around 9.30, we get told by the chicks selling drinks that the band is about to start. Awesome… (insert sarcasm here). A few minutes later, there’s no doubt the band has started with music blaring through. It gives us a chance to reminisce about all those times you dance along to a dodgy pub band. Probably too many times for me. A quick look at the band on the way to the restroom reveals that there is absolutely no one checking out the band. Makes you feel a little sorry for the band. But they are getting paid for practice though…

Apparently Tuesday is the night is The Hawthorn’s night. Uni night where it’s packed. But those times are well past me now. I’m 28 and still went to the Hawthorn. Maybe I should never have admitted I’ve gone to the Hawthorn at this age and never written this post…
