BarAmigo’s two pesos – Great beer selection in a gastro pub setting.

The back bar area at the Courthouse Hotel

The Courthouse Hotel is a gastro pub bordering on fine dining. We’re just dropping by for a beer and are pleasantly surprised by the boutique beers available on tap. It’s a quiet and easy going atmosphere for a drink later on in the evening on a Friday night.

We’ve just come from stuffing ourselves with food and drink at Prudence and are continuing our random but sorta educated walk around North Melbourne. Bring on the Courthouse Hotel.

Couple of years ago I had a corporate lunch at the Courthouse Hotel. Great food fitting of its gastro pub status. Maybe even fine dining like but I’m so not qualified to be commenting on what is gastro or fine dining… Go read some other site :)

Anyway… we’re here for a beer and am very impressed with the boutique beer selection available. First up is HaandBryggeriet. I think we chose it because we simply couldn’t pronounce the name. Some Norwegian beer I believe. Result was $11 a pot. Not the cheapest by any means and we were probably not in the best state to be having a 8-9% beer. But despite all of this, it really was a great beer. Worth every cent of the $11. We also had a Hop Hog by Feral Brewing. Also top stuff but a little harder to get down. Thankfully a bit cheaper as well at $6.50 a pop. Maybe cause its “only” 5.8%. Thanks for the twitter recommendation from the Courthouse! (Oh yeah.. you can follow us on Twitter at BarAmigoMel).

There weren’t too many people at the Courthouse Hotel so its a bit hard to generalise who is there. A large group at the back where we were and a few others towards the front. All enjoying a quiet drink. Probably a few diners enjoying a drink after dinner. The Courthouse is really a spot to have a quiet chat in a gastro pub atmosphere so you’re not really too worried what the crowd is like. But its not the kind of place to rock up in torn jeans and runners.

As there aren’t too many people around, its pretty chilled. You can catch the rest of the footy on the TV at the front bar if you like.

It’s now 11 and we’ve had a couple of beers and decide its time to head off. Tram in 2 minutes which is great to head back into the city and save money on that cab fare.

The Courthouse Hotel has been great to enjoy that quiet boutique beer and have a chat with your friends. Next time it will be worth having some of the food.
