Gerald's Bar... menu on the ladder on the left and a book like wine list in the bottom right

Grab a bottle of wine and enjoy some good food in a surprisingly lively atmosphere for a Tuesday night. Gerald’s Bar embodies everything you’d want for a midweek catchup. Pleasant atmosphere, a good wine selection and great food. You can’t go past it.

My friends and I have just started a wine appreciation course at Rathdowne Cellars. Every Tuesday for 4 weeks. Good for me as I know relatively little about wine. Bad for me as it could possibly mean that I become very picky about wines and won’t be satisfied with the cheapest wine on the wine list (actually… it this just shows how much of a tight arse I am…)

We’re pretty hungry by the time the course knocks off at 9. And Gerald’s Bar certainly hits the spot. Arriving at 9.15pm, Gerald’s Bar is still pretty busy. There’s only room left at the bar for the 4 of us. All of the tables are still busy with diners polishing off their bottles of wine.

You can tell Gerald’s Bar is a wine bar as pretty much everyone has a glass of wine. Not really the kind of place to come for a beer. I can only assume the wine list is rather extensive given the look of it… my friends rightfully chose the wine and left me out of the decision making… Best for everyone. My friend’s choice is some bottle of Italian wine. Maybe a Sangiovese. Anyway, it tastes good and I like. It’s about $50-60 for a bottle. I didn’t look at the wine list so just guessing.

Time for food. Love the ladder that gets wheeled across with the menu hand written on a bit of butcher’s paper. Pretty much $20 for all mains. Pork Belly is the choice for 3 out of 4 of us and we all agree it is very good. Just the right size as well. Dessert of some sort of freshly cooked doughnut is great as well.

It’s still pretty busy during the time we took to eat our meal. Even the couple of tables outside have punters… it is August mind you… Crowd is generally groups of friends enjoying a chat ranging from early 20s through early 30s. Some older people around as well. But everyone has one thing in common… a glass of wine.

By 11pm we’ve polished off our bottle of wine and I need to get some sleep. This wine course is going to play havoc with my marathon training… Actually… maybe its good for my training… if I can run the night after drinking wine… it will be a piece of cake on the day :)

Gerald’s Bar is a great midweek spot with a lively atmosphere to enjoy some good food and wine with your friends.
