BarAmigo’s two pesos – typically St. Kilda spot that’s lively despite whatever the weather throws up

When visited – Sat 19 Nov 2011 6.45pm to 11pm

Hit up Republica for a vibrant atmosphere, music and drinks. If it’s a sunny, warm day… get here early to bag a table cause it’s bound to be busy. Even if it is raining, there’s still some good times to be had.

It’s meant to be almost summer… but tonight it’s not with pretty heavy rain at times. But that’s not stopping people from heading out to Republica. Hardly any tables or chairs available under the marquee when we arrive at 7pm. But thankfully someone moves and we pounce. If it were sunny and warm, the whole place would be packed out I reckon. Looking forward to coming back when it actually is a nice day.

$19 for a Fat Yak pint and a Bulmers pint. Standard city prices. Cocktails at $16 and jugs of sangria at $30. The cocktails and sangria don’t take my fancy so I’m sticking to the Fat Yak tonight. Pizza at just under $20 each. The salmon and prawn pizza is pretty good. Same with the pumpkin and feta pizza even though its vego :) But generally happy and satisfied with the pizza. Filling indeed.

Crowd wise it starts from mid/late 20s plus but getting there at 7pm it certainly feels like a mid 30s plus crowd. But it does get younger as the night progresses. Family friendly at 7pm with a few kids around. Pretty mixed in terms of dress… some guys looking pretty dressed down in t shirts and sneakers whilst others in shirts, dressy jeans and leather shoes. Quite a lot of chicks in dresses/skirts and heels especially later on in the night. But dressy jeans for chicks at least is the go.

Not the best photo but hey... it gives you some idea of what Republica's like

From 7pm right through to 11pm it’s a lively and buoyant vibe. The guy on acoustic guitar certainly helps. Covers of songs from Powderfinger, Kings of Leon, Crowded House and Matchbox 20 to name a few get the crowd going. Even some people singing and dancing along later on in the night. Great to set the scene. The live music really adds something and is why some people head over to Republica.

The guy finishes his set at 11pm and immediately afterwards I kinda feel like the vibe has just dropped that little bit. Just a little more subdued now. It’s our cue to head off and hit up somewhere else. Bring on Acland St and somewhere for a dance… Oh no… this will mean the dirty Doulton…

Republica is a great spot for a vibrant atmosphere, great vibe, live music and a few drinks. Even on a night that’s raining… bring on a summer arvo session or balmy evening of drinks at Republica one day.
