BarAmigo’s two pesos – casual, not pretentious and chilled… good for a catch up over drinks… kinda being like at home…

When visited – Sat 4 Feb 2012 8pm to 2am

29th Apartment feels exactly well… like an apartment. Chilled, relaxed, homely. Easy to get a drink and certainly not pretentious. Great to catch up with your friends.

View from the back of 29th Apartment... check out the clothes swap rack... it's pretty casual with guys in thongs and a singlet

I’m here for my friend’s 30th… gotta love a dress up party out at a bar. The back area is booked but the private function is spilling out and starting to take over the area for the public.

What’s the theme I hear? Costumes beginning with M… Madhatters, maids, Maverick, military, morman, Mario, Minnie Mice and Madonna… I’m dressed as Mugatu. Zoolander is one of my top 5 hangover movies so I can’t go past Mugatu. If only I were more organised beforehand to take public transport rather than a cab… Yeah I would have secretly loved the attention…

29th Apartment feels just like you’re in someone’s house. Trademark bathtub out the back made for drunken photos… queen bed… Connect 4… Jenga… various seating options… and a fully stocked bar. Well all apartments have fully stocked bars right?

Crowd is from late teens/mid 20s through mid 30s. Certainly later in the night was feeling younger. All pretty casually dressed actually (obviously not commenting about those dressed up in theme).  Jeans the standard and guys in t shirts. Occasional skirt but nothing too dressy.

Drinks are rather standard with a scotch and dry with lime and house sparkling for about $18. If you’re after some food the pizzas are decent ranging in price from $10 to $14. Not the largest. Probably a medium if that. But decent tasting and enough to line the stomach if you need.

Music is chilled dance music. Nothing thumping and only just pacy enough to get dancing if you’re keen. Or if you’ve got 50 other people around dressed up in ridiculous costumes.

If you’re smoking leave your drinks inside and take a short wander out onto Fitzroy St. I don’t normally head outside to keep friends company but being dressed up as Mugatu… how could I pass up the opportunity. With my friend being dressed as Medusa we’re getting more than a few looks. In the 5 minutes that we were standing there we had two people start conversations with us…  At least the dress ups are wonderful conversation starters… even with randoms.

And that theme certainly continues inside. The crowd is pretty friendly and willing to chat… but read that with your beer goggles on cause I’m (apparently) looking pretty ridiculous dressed as Mugatu.

29th Apartment doesn’t become too packed at anytime through the whole night. Pretty easy to come in and grab a seat at any time.

Can’t believe I haven’t mentioned Connect 4 yet… undefeated through at least 5 games over the night…  No I’m not trying to be anti social… just can’t refuse being challenged at Connect 4. After a big night the night before at Charlton’s and a few drinks now… I’m lucky no one took me on at Jenga…

Hit up 29th Apartment for chilled out drinks with a casual homely vibe. Kinda like your home away from home with the added bonus that you don’t need to clean up after yourselves.
