BarAmigo’s two pesos – a funky, cool basement bar full of character as any typically good Melbourne bar

When visited – Fri 5 Apr 2012 8.15pm to 10.45pm

GoGo Bar is a cool, funky but chilled basement bar. Plenty of places to sit or hang out by the bar. Cocktails and table service… Anything else you want?

GoGo Bar at about 8.30pm on Thursday before Good Friday

It’s my first real test of Alcohol Free April. Thursday before Good Friday… Impromptu drinks after work, friend’s drinks at Three Degrees and now kicking onto GoGo Bar. I’m making an effort to count how many drinks I would’ve had and I’m up to 4 upon reaching GoGo Bar at 8.15pm.

GoGo Bar is typically Melbourne. It’s seems to be thriving off the success of Chin Chin (if you ran Chin Chin you’d be stupid not to start a bar nearby) but independently deserves the attention like any other cool Melbourne bar. They’ve carried on the Thai theme with the name but don’t expect to be in a Thai gogo bar…

It’s dimly lit, but not too dimly lit and has character to it. It’s set up for the small or large group of friends with many booths down the side and a lounge area towards the dj booth. Also good for a date. Pretty versatile really and good for any occasion.

You can't help but notice this... And 5 days into an alcohol free month i'm lonely for alcohol... :)

At 8.15pm it looks like most of the clientele are here for a pre dinner drink before heading upstairs to Chin Chin. You can grab some food from Chin Chin here at GoGo Bar but it doesn’t look like many people are taking up that options. Generally people are well dressed with jeans, shirt and dress shoes for guys and dressy jeans or a dress/skirt for chicks. Age range I’d say is late 20s through to early 40s. More of a dinner crowd at this time. Not overly busy but gets gradually busier throughout the night.

Later on towards 10pm it begins to be a younger crowd. Tending to be more hipster and younger. I guess we’ve moved away from the pre dinner crowd and towards the drinking crowd. Early/mid 20s through early 30s now. Still pretty dressy and the hipsters with more individual flair and character.

Drinks wise its Pepsi for me… But the cocktails do look good and GoGo Bar does look like a good spot for a cocktail. The cocktail menu is grouped by seasons so choose something suitable for Melbourne’s changeable weather. Cocktails generally $15-20 which is pretty standard for the city. Maybe slightly on the cheaper side when you’re compared to places like 1806 and Bar Americano. 380ml Fat Yak on tap for $8. White Rabbit stubbie for $10. 640ml Beer Lao long neck for $14. Wines from Australia, France and elsewhere starting from $9.50 a glass. Generally $10-$13 a glass.

Music wise its hip hop but still kinda chilled. Not overly loud by any means so still very easy to maintain that conversation without shouting. The music helps create that busy atmosphere and means you’re not drowned out by voice noise.

At 10.45pm my friends are up for something more active and some dancing. Unfortunately that means Spice Market cause of the proximity. Going to be interesting without any alcohol…

GoGo bar is a cool funky typically Melbourne venue with a chilled out, relaxed but still feeling busy atmosphere. Hits a chord with the pre dinner crowd and then the younger bar hopping drinking hipster crew later on in the evening. Something for everyone and you’ll feel comfortable here as long as you dress up a bit.
