BarAmigo’s two pesos – heaven for craft beer

When visited – Tue 24 Apr 2012 9.45pm to 11.30pm

Local Taphouse means craft beer. Over 20 craft beers on tap so its heaven for beer lovers. And its also a great pub as well…

The side room at Local Taphouse... grab a beer and play petanque... lane on the right...

We’ve just hit up Treehouse Lounge for some food and are cruising down Carlisle St for our next venue. If it weren’t for my alcohol free month, I’d be making a bee line for the Local Taphouse. But we briefly walk past the Balaclava Hotel and a couple of other venues before settling on the Local Taphouse.

I’ve only been to the Local Taphouse a couple of times before but its always been busy. Anzac Day eve is no exception. Tonight the upstairs bit is closed so everyone is packed downstairs. I quite like the upstairs bar and the rooftop area. Great to enjoy a beer.

Speaking of beer… (I was trying to see how far I’d get through this post without talking about beer… besides the intro)… over 20 craft beers on tap. Well I might be wrong about that as I can spot a cider on tap… anyway… Out of all the venues I’ve visited over my alcohol free month this will be one of the most challenging. Trumer Pils is the most commercial brand out of the varieties (IMO) followed by Little Creatures and Mountain Goat. That speaks volumes.

My choices would have been Mikkeller’s Beer Hop Breakfast American Stout (or possibly Bridge Road’s Robust Porter), Bear Republic’s Racer 5 IPA then Malt Shovel’s Mad Brewers Hoppy Hefeweizen… In writing this I’m tempted to grab a beer out of the fridge now.

Besides the beer… dig into a cider or wine. Maybe… Sorry don’t know what else is available besides coke. Pub food reasonably priced but I reckon i’d be on a liquid diet at Local Taphouse.

I briefly mentioned that it was busy on Anzac Day Eve. That’s certainly reflective of the other times I’ve been to Local Taphouse. Upstairs outdoor area and bar area were full and tough to get a seat as well when it was open.

Crowd wise you’re looking at anyone and everyone. Cause of the beer there’s a few groups of guys but anyone and everyone’s welcome. No need to dress up. Just grab a beer and enjoy the night. Or you could play Petanque in the side room behind the bar.

You can’t go past the craft beers at Local Taphouse. I reckon Local Taphouse has the biggest variety of craft beer available on tap in Melbourne. If I’m wrong… I’ve love you to tell me so I can drink some beer at that other venue.
