BarAmigo’s two pesos – Buzzing, busy atmosphere but still chilled out and easy going

When visited – Fri 13 Jul 2012 6.30pm to 9.15pm

Rue Bebelons is a little alternative but great to catch up with friends in the unpretentious easy going atmosphere but yet still feeling busy and outgoing.

Update January 2013 – Rue Bebelons has unfortunately closed. Developers are redeveloping the building. It’s a sad day but hopefully Rue Bebelons can find another location or set up something kinda similar.

So we’ve been given a $50 drink card to check out Rue Bebelons so make sure you have your beer goggles on whilst reading this review… And we’ve been told that Friday early after work is the best time to head across.

Rocking up at 6.30pm Rue Bebelons is busy. It’s a buoyant buzzing atmosphere. A heap of voice noise which is loud enough to feel like its a happening place but just low enough so that you can still hear the tunes in the background. It’s 60s music with Peggy Sue one of the tracks which pops up. No seating available but we’re able to squeeze into a spot and stand at the bar. Fine by me as I’ve been at sitting at my desk all day.

The music is fitting of the character of Rue Bebelons. It’s individual and certainly not mainstream. Very unassuming and definitely not pretentious. There’ s a free bookswap which sums up Rue Bebelons.  Wear what you feel and enjoy the drinks with your mates. The only suit in Rue Bebelons is my mate who rocked up about 8.15pm. Hoodies are common place.

About 7.30pm on a Friday at Rue Bebelons

It’s certainly not a corporate crowd. Kinda alternative which is rather obvious given the character of the Rue Bebelons.  Various age ranges from mid 20s through to late 30s. The crowd is busy enjoying their wine and beers for a Friday evening.

I’ve been told that chicks wanna know about the state of the toilets… Well my comment here is that is like an outhouse. Yeah lets move on…

Is Rue Bebelons French? Spanish? I have no idea and can’t be bothered googling. But I guess from the couple of Mendoza wines its Spanish. And I’m pretty happy with the Mendoza wines as Mendoza for me tops the list of places that I could actually live in… after Melbourne of course. Wineries, mountains, skiing, rivers, sizeable but not too big and great nightlife…

The menu on the wall at Rue Bebelons

IPG beer schooners at $7.50 each. A Cape Mentelle sav blanc and a Marlborough region sav blanc at about $7.50 a glass as well. Forgot the Mendoza white wine I had but that was $9 a glass. Mulled wine at $8 a glass. Aparently the mulled wine is voted the best in Melbourne by Tourism Australia… Um… why is Tourism Australia judging mulled wines?! Anyway… there you go. No pre mix stuff here at Rue Bebelons. Dry Ginger Ale from a bottle. Great if its fresh but unfortunately for my mate it was sitting there for a while and had lost its fizz.

Pizzas at $8 a pop don’t look too bad. It is making me hungry but we’ve decided to head off elsewhere. Mrs Parma’s is on the cards. Bring on an eggplant parma. Always wanted to try an eggplant parma and this is my chance as my friends are vegetarian. My meat eating mates would give me too much crap and wouldn’t let me live it down.

Rue Bebelons is a good spot to catch up with your friends early on a Friday evening in a busy outgoing and unpretentious atmosphere. More like a cafe that morphs into a bar in the evening but still good for the drink or 3.

Salud
