BarAmigo’s two pesos – busy, happening, fun and laid back at the same time

When visited – Sat 30 Jun 2012 10.45pm to 11.30pm

The Fox Hotel on a Saturday night is a busy, happening place. A jovial, diverse crowd all knocking back a few drinks and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.

The bar at the Fox Hotel. Love the craft beer selections available

I’m the first to admit that I don’t head out up north of the city often enough. I’m blaming it on the fact that I hardly go out of my way to check out different places. Mates moving north of the city should help though.

Just hit up the Gem and now the Fox Hotel. Pity I’m driving tonight after dinner for a mate’s 30th but it’s probably a blessing in disguise. I’m pretty sure I would have been sucked into a decently long session here at the Fox Hotel.

The atmosphere at the Fox Hotel is rather happening. Lots of people around filling up pretty much all the space around all the different rooms. Little chance at grabbing a table at 10.45pm. Even less chance when they clear out the rooftop area at 11pm. Speaking of the rooftop area, unfortunately didn’t have a chance to check it out. Sounds like a good rooftop bar area which would be great for summer.

Crowd is rather diverse. Age range from early 20s through to early 50s. Pretty casually dressed which is what should be expected for a pub. Nothing flashy which suits the laid back atmosphere of the place. One of the good things about these inner northern pubs are you don’t get the riff raff of those travelling long distances heading for a late night out. South Yarra, Richmond and City sometimes you get those groups who are making the night that big big night out. Sometimes causes trouble.

Love the ping pong table. Ping pong and beers is a great combo. Wonder if the Fox Hotel would let you start an expensive game of beer pong? J

Great beer selection at the Fox Hotel. A pot of Cavalier English Nut Brown Ale for me ($5 pot / $9 pint). Other beers on tap include Fox Lager, Coopers Pale, Goat Hightail and Schofferhofer Hefeweizen. Also some rotating beers on tap which is great for the craft beer lovers.

Beer garden out back isn’t bad and great to hang out. Unfortunately a bit cold but they do have the gas heaters on.

Music is pretty varied and fun. Some great hits from the 90s. Fight for your right to Party by the Beastie Boys makes the grade.

Food is meant to be pretty good here. Expect gastro pub type food without being overly expensive.

11.30pm and I’m done. Driving so gotta watch the drinks. Plus catching the opening stage of the Tour de France is pretty tempting.

The Fox Hotel is a great laid back pub that’s pretty busy and happening on a Saturday night. Visit with a group of friends and enjoy your drinks.
