BarAmigo’s two pesos – good pub with decent range of craft beers and friendly staff
When visited – Sat 4 Aug 2012 8.45pm to 10.45pm
The Gertrude Hotel is a decent pub/bar with a decent choice of craft beers. Good to catch up with friends and enjoy a beer or grab some food.
So I’m starting to head out a bit more north side. Starting at Gertrude Hotel and moving around Gertrude St. Little did I know the night would take us to Workers Club, Gertrude’s Brown Couch and Builder’s Arms.
The first thing that struck me about the Gertrude Hotel was the craft beer available. At least 2 taps which rotate beers. Tonight one is Cooper’s Extra Strong Vintage Ale ($7/pot). Great beer to start. Unfortunately the dude before me ordered two expresso martinis so I’m gonna have to wait. Give credit to the bar staff cause they did apologise for the time it took for service. But it is understandable given a cocktail has been ordered. At least its the same cocktail.
Besides Cooper’s Extra Strong Vintage Ale there’s another guest beer on tap. Little Creatures Single Batch ($6/pot). Actually was given free small taster without asking for it. Good service here at Gertrude Hotel. Other drops available on tap included a Thunder Road ($10/pint), Cavalier’s Pale Ale and Littler Creatures Bright Ale.
Crowd is generally mid to late 20s. Gertrude Hotel looks to be the kind of place to enjoy a bit of food earlier in the evening and then kick on with drinks. The front bar is rather full around 9pm but comes and goes in waves. Certainly becomes busier later on with a close game between the Pies and the Saint. Lots of blokes checking out the last few minutes. Dress wise is rather nice but casual. Dressy but nothing over the top to go with the casual atmosphere of Gertrude Hotel. T shirts fine for guys over here.
Just as I’m discovering with many of these Collingwood/Fitzroy pubs there’s a great back outdoor area here at Gertrude Hotel. All seats taken an rather loud voice noise. Certainly feels rather happening with an upbeat atmosphere to kick on with a drink. Certainly more happening out back than inside, except for the footy.
At the front bar of Gertrude Hotel there’s low key tunes in the background. But like out back its mostly voice noise.
Gertrude Hotel is a decent spot to catch with friends over drinks and probably grab that bit of food earlier in the evening. Love the small but good selection of craft beer.
Salud
Eddie
