BarAmigo’s two pesos – one of the great Melbourne beer gardens and all round pubs.

When visited – Fri 11 Jan 2013 7.30pm to 12.30am

Drop by Windsor Castle for one of Melbourne’s top beer gardens. Guaranteed to be busy for a Friday night, Saturday night or a Sunday session… unless it’s raining.

The beer garden at Windsor Castle about 10pm on Friday night

We’ve canned heading to the cricket after Australia scored 300+ against Sri Lanka. Where to head to in Windsor way of Chapel St? Been way to long since we’ve dropped by Windsor Castle. Pathetically too long I reckon.

If the weather is nice, you can’t go wrong with Windsor Castle. The beer garden out back is going to be busy so try and get there as early as you can to bag a spot.

Rocking up to Windsor Castle at 7.30pm on a Friday there’s not much chance of grabbing a table in the beer garden. People have settled in and you’d need to hover and wait for someone to leave before finding a table. We have a group of around 7 of us so I’m not surprised that we can’t find anything in the beer garden. It’s inside for us.

Inside it’s surprisingly big. Just extends out to extra rooms that you generally wouldn’t think that they were there. Well maybe I’ve always just headed outside to the beer garden and haven’t noticed.

Food wise look at about just over $20 for a meal. A chicken and leek pie with chips is $21. Very hot out of the oven and filling. Parma for $23 which looks really good. Spicy vegetable burritos at $19.

Drinks wise you’re looking at $10 for a pint of Fat Yak. A Canadian Club and dry about $8.50. If you’re looking at champagne take the bar tender’s advice and stay clear of the cheapest bottle. Pay a bit extra and you won’t regret it. My friends certainly didn’t.

Crowd wise it tends to be a kinda flashy south side crew but a bit casual. Kind of dressed up casual. Shorts, thongs and tshirts for guys are fine. You’ll find the odd baseball cap around. Then you have the dudes who are rather well dressed as Windsor Castle is the start of a longer night. Some chicks casually dressed in tights or jeans fitting of a beer garden. But again, some chicks dressed up a bit too much for a pub probably cause they are ready to head out elsewhere on Chapel St afterwards. You can be casual at Windsor Castle but its that kind of place which draws a bit more of a dressy crowd.

Age wise the crowd is mid 20s through early 30s. And a few on the other side of 30 as well. Windsor Castle is a pub so expect a wide range of age ranges.

The beer garden will start to clear out from around 11pm so you’re pretty comfortable to grab a spot outside then. Otherwise, its pretty busy from 7.30pm onwards so try to get in early if you wanna spot in the beer garden.

Windsor Castle is one of the great beer gardens in Melbourne so get in early if the weather is nice and you want to sit outside. But no matter what time you rock up, it will be a good night out.
