BarAmigo’s two pesos – Great coffee, locally sourced, well cooked, reasonably priced food and easy going to catch up for brunch.

When visited – Sun 20 Jan 2013 11.30am to 12.45pm

NBHD Neanderthal (Neighbourhood Neanderthal) is an easy going full of character spot for lunch staying true to locally sourced, organic food. They’re really into their coffee too…

You don’t really need to put your beer goggles on for this review but doing a favour for a friend who has just started working at NBHD Neanderthal. Opened up late 2012 so giving them a hand. But there’s certainly no charity in this review though. NBHD Neanderthal is a cool little spot which thoroughly deserves a good review in its own right.

NBHD Neanderthal’s philosophy is locally sourced, natural and well cooked food to go with good times and good friends.  We’ve dropped by for breakfast and are both sold on the Canadian hot cakes with maple syrup ($10) and bacon ($3.50). Filling and exactly what we’re after. The NBHD wrap looks pretty good. I almost selected the pork belly ($14.90) but in the end couldn’t do pork belly and fries as the first meal of the day. Maybe if I were more hung over….

If you’re into your coffee you’ll certainly like the couple of blends available from NBHD Neanderthal.  The Crompton Road ($3.80) goes well with milk and the Tightrope ($4.50) goes well black with a “strawberry jam” kinda taste. I’m just relaying what my friend told me… All those coffee blind tasting sessions have paid off for her.  We’re each given a small shot of the Tightrope to have a try. Can certainly see how black coffee can be rather addictive.

Come early evening/night NBHD Neanderthal becomes a bar. Looking forward to dropping by one evening for a drink. There’s plenty of space outside out the back which would be good for an outdoor drink. Also an upstairs bit inside which the guys at NBHD Neanderthal say will become a spot for live music. Music will definitely be heard downstairs so should be a pretty good vibe and atmosphere when the live music is happening.

The night before (Saturday night) was apparently pumping and busy. They did some good business so for NBHD Neanderthal’s sake, hope it continues. Definitely putting NBHD Neanderthal on the list of places to check out in the evening sometime. Damn… the list is getting too long.

NBHD Neanderthal is a good all rounder and great to drop by for breakfast , lunch or dinner for no frills, locally sourced, good grub. You won’t be disappointed.
